4 Ways Seniors Can Access Free or Discounted Rides

Thanks to modern medicine, people are living longer and more active lifestyles through their retirement years.  And with the help of modern technology and benefits programs, you can also find more ways to get around even if you no longer drive. But did you know that in addition to all the new ride-share apps, there are also free transportation options for senior citizens? Here’s what you need to know to take advantage of these benefits.

4 Ways Seniors Can Access Free or Discounted Rides

Utilizing your benefits can help you maintain your independence. For those who don’t know where to start, we have compiled a list of community programs and organizations that offer free and discounted transportation for senior citizens.

1. Local Transit Authority

Many transportation authorities provide free and reduced rides for eligible seniors. And despite what you may think, they aren’t limited to large cities either. Most towns and cities have different programs to help seniors get to doctor’s appointments, run errands, and take care of other vital things they need to sustain their lifestyles.

In most places, seniors on disability or other assistance programs can receive free rides through paratransit and demand-response services. However, you may need to obtain a special pass or ID card to access this benefit. This usually requires you to provide proof of age or disability, a note from your doctor stating that you don’t drive, or proof of income. When you use dial-a-ride programs, they may have additional criteria such as verification that you have difficulty walking, live alone, or live with another disabled person.

Since requirements vary depending on where you live, it’s best to contact your local transit authority for the most recent information about who can take advantage of these services.

2. National Volunteer Transportation Center

Another option is to contact the National Volunteer Organization Center with volunteer drivers who provide transportation solutions for those who need them. They emphasize life-building and sustaining assistance with rides for grocery shopping and medical appointments. However, they don’t limit people to these services.

The NVOC is active in all 50 states and will connect you with volunteer drivers through groups like AlterNetWays and AssistRides. But if you use their services, make sure you are clear about your destination, accessibility issues, and time frame since they have limited hours of operation.

3. Non-Emergency Medical Transportation

NEMT is a program that provides transportation for people in need of medical care but not ambulance transport. For example, they can help people who need rides to doctor’s appointments, hospitals, and other healthcare facilities.

For most people, it’s usually a free service funded through other programs like Medicare or Medicaid, their local government, or private insurance. Therefore, you will probably need to contact your healthcare provider to ensure it’s included in your plan. They may also ask you to verify that you meet their age, disability, or income requirements for this service.

You can also get in touch with your local Area Agency on Aging to get more information. Their staff can assist with your application and also help you access other free services for senior citizens in your area.

4. Ride-Share Services

Although they aren’t free, you also have more commercial services available as well. These are usually faster and more convenient, but they will come at a higher price. However, they do offer reduced fare rides and senior discounts.

    • Lyft Pink gives subscribers a 5% discount and free priority pickups.
    • UberSenior Program offers discounted rides and additional support if you have accessibility requirements. They also have commercial accounts with special benefits for senior centers.
    • Lift Hero is currently only available in limited markets, but it is a restricted service for seniors only. Hopefully, it will be more widely available very soon.

Although transportation can be more difficult as we age, there are plenty of services that can help you maintain your independence without the financial burden. No matter where you live, you can find free services that will keep you active throughout your golden years.
