Boosting Your Electric Vehicle’s Battery Life: 5 Techniques to Maximize Battery Performance

If you have an electric vehicle (EV), getting the most out of your battery is typically a priority. By doing so, you’re EV gives you more value, as you’ll be able to use it for longer without needing to worry about the battery failing or underperforming. Fortunately, there are a few ways to improve its long-term performance, and they’re all incredibly simple. Here are five techniques to maximize your EV battery life.

1. Keep the Charge in the Right Range

Generally, you can extend the life of your EV battery by keeping the charge level in the correct range. Avoid allowing the battery to get below 10 percent, as allowing the battery to drain completely can alter its performance. Additionally, don’t charge above 90 percent on a frequent basis, as that can also negatively impact your battery.

2. Skip Rapid Charging

While rapid charging options can allow you to power up your battery in less time, it comes with a cost. Usually, rapid charging involves high-voltage DC charging, and that strains the battery. In turn, it can reduce your EV battery life. Instead, it’s best to stick with slow charging options as much as possible, as that’s better for the battery.

3. Watch Out for Extreme Temperatures

Extreme heat or cold aren’t great for your EV battery life, as the thermal management system will drain your battery faster. While you might not be able to avoid driving on hot days, try not to park out in the sun when it’s very hot for more than a few minutes. Instead, attempt to find some shade.

On cold days, you want to shield your EV from the elements. Try to park in a garage if it’s an option, as that can help keep your battery in the best possible shape.

4. Don’t Charge Right After Driving

After you’ve driven, your EV battery is hotter than it is after it’s had a chance to sit with the car off. Since charging can generate heat, give your EV battery a chance to cool down before you attach the vehicle to a charger. Otherwise, charging can introduce more heat, and that’s never ideal for a battery of any kind, including your EV battery. By allowing it to cool offer, you’re reducing strain on the battery, leading to a longer lifespan.

5. Skip the Nightly Charging

Every time you charge your EV, you’re degrading its capacity a bit. Unless you drive a distance that requires the full use of your EV battery every day, don’t charge it every night. Instead, allow the charge to reduce over time, and start charging when it gets near 20 percent or when the distance it can provide is below what you’ll need for the next trip.
